Vocational Services
The Community Outreach Program for the Deaf (COPD) provides a wide range of vocational services including job training, job placement, career counseling, supported employment, on-the-job training, and assistance with interviewing and resume writing skills. All placements are based on the individual's desires, with supports provided, as necessary. COPD provides guidance and counseling through job skills classes and workshops. Individuals are assisted with job site and job matching analysis, and given information on employer compliance with the ADA. Vocational services are available to all individuals with a disability.
Job Placement
In a hearing world, Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals have limited access to services that allow them to compete in the job market. At COPD, we assist these individuals in accessing the training and services needed to obtain and retain employment, allowing them to develop self-reliance while contributing to their communities. COPD partners with Vocational Rehabilitation Services and the Pima County One Stop Career Center to provide services.
Supported Employment
The Supported Employment Training Program provides services for clients with significant employment barriers who need extensive services. Training is provided in a number of occupations, to include hotel cleaning, postal services, janitorial services, landscaping, food service, and woodworking. All training is conducted in as group environment supervised by trained COPD staff.
Work Adjustment
COPD provides Work Adjustment Training to individuals with additional employment barriers who need extra support to prepare for competitive employment in the community. Work Adjustment services provide an opportunity to practice and acclimate to the world of work, learn values, demands, and responsibility of work, and develop an understanding of employer expectations.
Job Coaching
COPD staff members are available to provide on-site job coaching for individuals who are just beginning a new job. Clients are assisted with completing new hire paperwork, meeting with supervisors and co-workers, understanding their jobs, and working out communication, safety, or transportation challenges.
Summer Work Program
The Summer Youth Program is a six week program designed to help Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth develop work skills and prepare for entry into the workforce. COPD staff assess vocational interests and needs of the youth in the program and work with community employers for placement opportunities that match those interests.
